leap year day | top 25 facts

don't be fooled by the calendar. there are only as many days in the year as you make use of          ~ charles richards

Leapday_08fb29_web
while we'd love our readers to think we share interesting tidbits here and there just for them, that's only true in part. truth is, the WizWog family has always been avid learners.

here's what we learned today -

1 - the original roman 355 day calendar had an extra 22-day month every few years to maintain the correct seasonal changes. by the time julius caesar took reign, the seasons no longer occurred during the same months they once had.

2 - this was remedied in 45 BC by removing the extra month and adding the extra day to a few months instead.

3 - julius caesar proclaimed the last day of february as Leap Year Day, skipping it three out of four years. back then, february 30th was the last day of the last month of the year, which is why he picked it.

4 - julius also threw in a month in honor of himself (julius - july)

5 - around 10 BC, it was found that the priests in charge of computing the calendar had been adding leap years every three years instead of the four decreed by caesar. as a result of this error, no more leap years were added until 8 AD - then every fourth year after 12 AD, until the gregorian calendar was introduced.

6 - in 4 AB emperor caesar augustus corrected acounting error in leap years. he also had the month of august named after him, and took the last day of february so that august can have 31 days, just like julius' month. now february has 29 days in leap years.

7 - the calendar was finally perfected by pope gregory xiii in 1582 who predicted easter and christmas would eventually fall on top of each other without his intervention.

8 - pope gregory determined that leap day should fall on any year divisible by 4 but not 100 (except whern the year is divisible by 400).

OK, did we all get that??

9 - century years were made leap years if they were divisible by 400. so, 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not.

10 - at the same time, pope gregory moved the end of the year to december 31st.

11 - he also moved the end of the year back two months so that easter would occur in the spring.

12 - today our year is 365.2425 days, off from our solor year by .00031, or one day's error over 4,000 years.

13 - leap seconds! some years are longer than others. this is mostly due to weather. every few years, scientists agreed to add or remove a second from a year right at midnight on january 1st or july 1st. this is called a leap second.

but wait - newsflash! scientists have now discovered that the earth is not rotating as fast, and have deemed this practice unnecessary.

14 - leap moons! many countries use a lunar calendar to celebrate religious holidays. whenever the lunar calendar falls behind the solar calendar by more than a moon month, a leap moon month is added to the lunar calendar.

15 - if you're a "leaper," you will have beaten the 1506 odds against being born on leap day.

16 - there is now in existence the worldwide leap year birthday club and the worldwide leap year festival.

17 - leap year was the traditional time that women could propose marriage. when the rules of courtship were stricter, women were only allowed to pop the question on one day every four years - february 19th.

18 - it is believed this tradition was started in 5th century ireland when st. bridget complained to st. patrick about women having to wait for so long for a man to propose. so, according to legend, st. patrick said women could propose on this one day in february during the leap year.

19 - according to english law, february 29th was ignored and had no legal status.

20 - folks assumed that traditions would also have no status on that day. it was also reasoned that since the leap year day existed to fix a problelm in the calendar, it could also be used to fix an old and unjust custom that only let men propose marriage.

21 - the first documentation of this practice dates back to 1288, when scotland passed a law that allowed women to propose marriage to the man of their choice in that year.

22 - they also made it a law that any man who declined a proposal in a leap year must pay a fine. the fine could range from a kiss to payment for a silk dress or a pair of gloves.

23 - in the united states, some people have erroneously referred to this date as sadie hawkins day, with women being given the right to run after unmarried men to propose. designed sadie hawkins day is actually november 15.

24 - there is a greek superstition that claims couples have bad luck if they marry during a leap year. apparently one in five engaged couples in greece will avoid planning their wedding during a leap year.

25 - herman hollerith developed the first computer on leap day 1860. he had been a special agent for the US census, and developed punch cards and electric tabulating machines in time to process the census returns, reducing considerably the time needed to complete the clerical work. hollerith's venture became part of what is now the IBM corporation.

Now that your brain is spinning with leap year explanation facts, here's one more fun factoid:

Q: what are your chances of being born on leap day?
A: about 1 in 1500.

"Little girls dance their way into your heart, whirling on the tips of angel wings, scattering gold dust and kisses in our paths."

It's no secret - we love our little girls. Remember Miss E and her amazing mommy and daddy from early last year?

value of a true friend | reflections

"Oh the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person. Having neither to weigh thought nor measure words, but pouring them all right out just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping and with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away."   ~ Dinah Craik Muldaur

Recently P and I have experienced an re-awakening - the value of a true friend.

It would be rhetorical to state that the two of us are true friends. Anyone who has ever seen us together or heard us speak of one another knows it unquestioningly.

From time to time we discuss deeply what makes one person there, truly, more than the next. We all go through life with different people by our sides at different times in our lives. But some people distinguish themselves. These are true friends.

There are times in all of our lives when we need the comfort and solace of someone who understands completely, and for some reason, continues to help us when we are at our worst - even when we, perhaps, exhaust them>

Going through dark times reveals who your real friends are. It's not to say that those who are not there for you during bad times are not good people nor good friends. But you get to see their true dedication and moral character about how they relate to you when you face adversity.

But real, true friends are the ones who come through with flying colors - when you do not even ask. There is something magical about the bonds of true friendship.

**

Personal to darlin' AG ~ Time after time again, in the past week particularly, with your sweet spirit you have defined the term 'true friend.' Your unconditional support and kindness and wisdom have moved my heart forward on that very long road to healing, just caring for my heart and letting me cry, and saying, "My friend, I care...," neither judging nor trying to change nor fix. Just being there ...

You have shared your heart ... and renewed mine in countless ways, all with your selfless gift of true friendship. You have made me grow a little taller in my soul.

There are not words enough to thank you. You have touched and inspired my soul - and the best way I know I can repay your incredible kindnesses are to pass them along to someone else in need. And you know I will.

And most positive thing to come out of these dark times? I can say without question, "I know you by heart." You are an unexpected and oh so appreciated Life Gift, and I feel blessed.

With a hug from my heart you have lifted,
~N

you say it's your birthday| a first!

Remember this dynamic duo from last Fall?
Twincerely Yours

Hard to believe these little cuties are Officially One, and we were delighted to be invited to photo their first birthday party.

Mom C and Dad D had obviously spent hours and hours decorating for this very special event. The celebration began even before we got to their home, starting with colorful balloons - pink, of course! - along the sidewalk leading to the front door.

Opening the door, it's Pink Party Central - right from the table with this FABulous cake -

Is there anything more precious than a daddy and daughter sharing special time together?

And finally, the moment we all wait for at a first birthday party ... THE CAKE!
Dainty Miss K took a few moments to blow out the candle with her daddy - then paused briefly to assess the possibilities before she daintily dipped a fingertip in the icing and tasted.

On the flip side, Miss J hesitated only briefly before she employed the full-hand technique.

Mom and dad helped out extricating hidden bananas from the goo - a definite favorite for both birthday girls.

We could hardly shoot fast enough to capture the party's countless clever details.

And as much fun as had partying with the G family, for us the best is yet to come - soon we'll be doing their Official One Year portrait session. We can hardly wait.

Happy birthday to our favorite year-old twins!

Balboa Adventure | Part 2 of 2

Adventure continued from here: Balboa Adventure | Part 1 of 2

Dear Readers: Sorry for the delay - you can stop sending emails asking for the rest of the Adventure. *wink*

Leaving our big-eyes calico kitty in her tree, we continued down the bay sidewalk where boats from dinghys to yachts are moored. Doncha love the "Private Pier" sign? So hoopty-doopty - heehee -

Each home and yard has its own unique character. Continuing down the sidewalk -

Like someone in the WizWog family, these residents were reluctant to put away their Christmas decor.

Check our the upper left corner of the first floor roof - yep, it's an angel.

Since Balboa Island had its beginnings with the establishment of wharves and railroads in the early 1900's, much of the Island has a definite vintage feel. So our last series of Balboa photos have been given that style post-processing.

Most of the homes - now very expensive prime property - have been remodelled several times over the decades, but there are a very few that appear nearly abandoned. Strange, property values being as high as they are.

And a couple built in about the 1950's, probably when Wizzy was swimming in this very bay.

we're back online!

Whew - working tirelessly, our website host had us back online before midday today. Yay, Marty! Clap

aliens have taken over our computer | back up soon!

Wizblog_aliencomputer_08fb01
Thanks to all of you who have emailed and let us know that our website and all its links are down - to slideshows, pricing, even from our web to the WizBlog here. For most of the past 24 hours, it's been up and down and down and up and down ... mostly down. Many apologies for your concern and inconvenience. Our web host has advised us our server has crashed. :(

As of this hour - 7:00pm Pacific - when you type in our site - wizzyandfriends.com - you'll get an unexpected turquoise page from our site host, stating "Apache is working on your cPanel and WHM Server." Translation: "our server has crashed - and we're working on fixing it."

They've been really responsive and responsible in the three years we've been hosted with them - and we expect this situation will be remedied shortly. They tell us they'll be working all night if need be.

Thanks for your patience, y'all.
